Healing

“The light that belongs to you is the light of joy. Radiance is not associated with sorrow.”   …ACIM

It seems that there’s great technological advances being made in the so-called medical fields of this world. But it also seems that the more advances occur the more patients these advances have to practice on. I don’t like being a downplayer but it seems to me that sickness and disease are gaining ground in spite of all the technological advances to treat them. I’ve heard it said that upwards of seventy percent of the population of some countries are on prescription medicine of one type or another. No matter what any of us believe there has to be something amiss with that scenario.

How many times have you ever visited a regular doctor and had him or her discuss nutrition or diet with you? I’d be more than willing to wager that there hasn’t been too many of those occurrences. Those who enter the medical field are not taught anything about proper nutrition and are actually encouraged to not discuss it. Most every so-called treatment of any illness today includes as its first line of attack the prescription pad. Well even that has been replaced by technology. Now a computer simply sends the request directly to the pharmacist. Simple and easy; isn’t it?

“Let food be thy medicine, and let medicine be thy food”   …Hippocrates

More than two thousand years ago the Greek Physician Hippocrates, who is  often referred to as the “Father of Medicine” understood the relationship between diet and health. If we look at the above quote that’s attributed to him we’re able to understand the intricacies of the idea. For it seems he came at it from two directions at once and made them very inclusive. We could very well derive from the phrase, let food be thy medicine, that he was suggesting that proper foods can play a large part in curing illness. And we can follow that by deciphering the phrase, let medicine be thy food, as a directive aimed at the prevention of illness.

Hippocrates

There has never been better advice given over the last twenty-three hundred years than his directive to let food be thy medicine and to let medicine be thy food. But even though Hippocrates is still considered to be the  Father of Medicine and his Hippocratic Oath a requirement for medical graduates to this day his advice concerning the relationship between food and medicine is almost completely ignored.

“Every human being is the author of his own health or disease.”   …The Buddha

The Buddha lived somewhere around a hundred years or so before Hippocrates. I’m not very familiar with the depth of the teachings of either one of them. Therefore, I don’t know if Hippocrates went into the importance of though nor do I know if The Buddha delved into the importance of food in health. That being said, I do think it’s highly likely that both made the connection and understood the relationship between the two.

The food we eat can, and will, be our medicine if we educate ourselves enough to choose wisely and believe in the power of our own choices. Medicine can, and will, be our food for exactly the same reason. Choosing wisely is so very, very important but the power contained within our beliefs far outranks it in importance. That’s why two people can eat practically the same diet and one will be healthy and the other unhealthy. In other words, diet is important but without a firm belief in its goodness it will not work as beneficially to health as it should.

“Once your mind is healed, it radiates health and thereby teaches healing.”   …ACIM

Humans make the mistake of believing that it’s the body that attracts illness and therefore, it’s the body alone that gets sick. But this is not the case. When The Buddha pointed out that every human being is the author of his own health or disease he understood that the physical body is not an author.

Writing any story or creating any condition first takes place in the mind. There can be no compromise in this. The body cannot, and does not, create anything. All things are first visualized in the mind through the power of thought and then brought to physical manifestation. And whether we want to believe it or not that includes, as The Buddha said, health or disease.

It seems that in this world the advancement of technologies and computer-generated prescriptions are not able to slow the advancement of illness and disease as much as we’re led to believe they should. It may seem as if I’m criticizing doctors and the health-care systems but that’s not the intent of this post. Even though I do believe the large pharmaceutical companies at the top of the systems do place their bottom-lines first.  The intent of this post is to share the message that if we’re ever going to escape the twin vultures of illness and disease then we’re going to have to take responsibility for our lives into our own hands. We’ve got to let go of the idea that someone or something out there somewhere is going to set us free. That responsibility lies with us.

Even though prevention is the most important aspect of the health dilemma we find ourselves facing. This post is directed toward healing. At this stage in our evolution it’s difficult to leave doctors out of the equation but we must not place our health completely in their hands.

The involvement of doctors could serve to reinforce the idea that healing must take place in the mind. We look upon doctors as authority figures and therefore, we grab hold of their words and internalize them. If we’re diagnosed with a disease and a doctor tells us that there’s no cure we internalize his or her prognosis and therefore it becomes our reality. On the other hand, if that same doctor, whom we look upon as an authority figure, were to tell us about the very same disease and suggest we could overcome it that would very likely become our reality. That’s why, in a lot of cases, placebos work. They work because of the power of the mind.

“When God created you, He made you part of Him.”   …ACIM

Until the message that’s contained in the above quote is accepted, believed and understood no genuine healing can take place regardless of technological advances, medical procedures, doctors or prescriptions. We must understand and believe that healing absolutely has to take place in the mind first. Therefore, the words, when God created me He made me part of Him, especially the phrase, He made me part of Him, should be memorized, repeated, thought about, meditated upon and kept in mind until they’re believed and understood.

Not one of us can serve two masters. We either believe something is true or we believe it’s false. That’s not to say there isn’t a period of doubt, contemplation and thought when we hear something as seemingly far-fetched as being told we’re part of God.

But eventually, after looking at all the evidence compiled on both sides, we have to decide where we stand. We either decide to believe it or we decide it’s false and we don’t believe it. As Jesus tells us in The Course: “You see the flesh or recognize the Spirit. There is no compromise between the two. If one is real the other must be false, for what is real denies its opposite. There is no choice in vision but this one.

Whether you think you believe it or not, you should ask yourself this question, for your answer will tell you where you stand on this; could a part of God be sick? If you answer yes, then you’re out of touch with anything spiritual and you should delete this blog. On the other hand, if you’re inclined to believe in anything with the least bit of spirituality to it then your answer must be, no. For only a true believer in the completeness and finality of physicality could answer yes to this question.

“Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty.”   …Albert Einstein

Every spiritual teacher who has ever graced this planet from the beginning of time till the present has, as the core of their teachings, tried to relay a very simple message to humanity. But humans have always found it too straightforward and simple to accept so they have disregarded it. They’re always looking for something more deep, mysterious, complicated and beyond understanding. That simple message in all its glory is simply this: GOD IS LOVE and SO ARE YOU!

Everyone understands that fear is Love’s opposite. In The Course Jesus points out that, If you are bound in any way, you do not know your Father or your Self. In other words, as Einstein implied in the above header quote, we’re in a self-made prison. The only reason for this is, we believe we have separated ourselves from God. Therefore, we have forgotten our Creator, which is Love, and on top of that we have forgotten who we are, which also is Love.

The only way we’ll ever escape this self-made prison of hell and allow healing to take place is to accept the Love we are and share that Love by, as Einstein said, widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty.

We will never experience a more kind, beautiful, compassionate, healthy, peaceful, joyful or loving world of freedom as long as we imprison, torture, slaughter and eat other sentient beings. As long as this barbaric practice continues we’ll continue to live in a prison made from the low, low frequencies of fear, disease and death.

I’m going to close this post with a truthful quote from Joaquin Phoenix: “It takes nothing away from a human to be kind to an animal.”
